I was happy to see that our golden trumpet tree, Handroanthus chrysotrichus, in bloom and flushing well. We acquired this individual from Almost Eden Plants almostedenplant in fall 2023 and it spent this winter in an unheated cold frame.

The male and female inflorescences of this local collection of Alnus serrulata are stunning even on a cloudy day. This species is a tenacious bank stabilizer where moisture is consistent. Later in the season the female inflorescences will take on the shape of miniature pine cones and persist through winter.

Gradations of green in the winter landscape are as important as flowers. Evergreen plants rarely stay the same shade of green after winter lows in the lower twenties - not so for this selection of Japanese Cedar! Cryptomeria japonica ‘Cryptonite’ sports the same bright vibrant green it has in summer. This plant was selected by the late legendary conifer collector Tom Cox of Canton, GA.
